Linking Families and Teens is a family communication evidence-based program that helps families share their values, build family bonds, and talk about the tough stuff – including sexual health and supportive relationships.
The five-hour interactive workshop is intended to increase the frequency and quality of communication about sexuality between teens and their supportive adults, enhance the relationship between teens and these adults, increase teens’ confidence about preventing unwanted pregnancy, increase supportive adults’ comfort with their youth receiving sexual health services, and decrease the number of unplanned teen pregnancies. It has been shown to lower unintended teen pregnancy rates and STIs among youth age 13 – 19.
The workshop includes activities like:
- All participants:
- Learning about sexuality
- Respecting and talking about similarities and differences between us can help build strong bonds
- Understanding a person’s “Love Language” and what makes your adolescent/parenting adult feel appreciated
- Planning how to have “tough talks” between adolescents and parenting adults
- Youth activities:
- Understanding STI and pregnancy prevention
- Understanding adolescent sexual health care rights
- Understanding how to access community-based sexual health resources
- Parenting Adult activities:
- Understanding Adolescent Brain Development
- How to build and/or strengthen a close connection with your youth
- The importance of sharing family values
- How to be an “Askable Adult”
This program helps families build a strong connection between youth and their parenting adult – it is a superpower that helps youth reach their goals, and supports healthy teen outcomes.
